OTR rescues 75,000kg of food product for Foodbank

In the last 12 months South Australia’s leading Convenience Retailer, OTR, has donated 75,000kg of food products to Australia’s largest hunger relief organisation, Foodbank SA, helping to reach the critical regional areas of the state with OTR’s 144 store network.

OTR have been working with Foodbank since September 2017 to rescue food and ambient products across the state. The donation has provided 150,000 meals to hungry South Australians who would otherwise not have any food for their families, this volume this is enough to fill a 25 metre swimming pool.

Over the last 12 months the partnership has grown with Foodbank now collecting from all 144 of OTR’s stores in both regional and metropolitan areas across South Australia, making it one of Foodbank SA’s biggest collection footprints.

Foodbank SA Chief Executive Officer Greg Pattinson said, “We are so grateful for OTR’s commitment across the entire state. Their regional network is critical for us as currently we know that those living in regional communities are 33% more likely to require food relief than those living in metro areas.”

“This partnership with OTR helps us distribute food to organisations in regional communities like Uniting Country SA, AC Care, and St Vincent DePaul who support people in regional areas experiencing the greatest food stress, places like Whyalla, Naracoorte, Kangaroo Island and Berri. Food collected from OTR regional stores stays in that regional area to feed families living there,” Greg said.

OTR’s Community Partnerships Manager Joann Skene, said, “As South Australia’s leading Convenience Retailer and one of the largest private employers in the state we want to help make a positive impact on our community and environment. Our partnership with Foodbank is integral in helping people who are vulnerable and hungry as well as reducing landfill.”

“We are very proud of this collaboration and will continue to support and help South Australians in need,” Joann said.

Foodbank provides 60 million meals a year to over 2,400 charities and 1,750 schools around the country and now being a part of OTR’s newest community program, OTRGive, they hope to top this figure in 2019.  OTR recently launched their innovative community program OTRGive in June. Two years in the making, the program works through the OTR App. Every time a customer shops or refuels at OTR with the OTR App, OTR will make a donation to a community group like Foodbank SA as chosen by the customer – at no cost to the customer.

Food rescued from OTR includes ambient products such as cereal, muesli bars, pet food, baby food, toiletries, toilet paper, tissues, bread products with chilled products being added to the list next.

OTR is working with Foodbank SA on other initiatives which will be announced in coming months.
