OTR helps OzHarvest provide 27,000 meals to those in need

South Australia’s leading retailer, OTR, and Australia’s first perishable food rescue organisation, OzHarvest, have started a long-term partnership to help support their food rescue operations, Nourish program and The Great Food Rescue Race.

The newly formed partnership has evolved following a successful food rescue pilot program, which started at OTR Aldinga, Christies Beach and Port Wakefield Road with over 9000 kg of food, which is the equivalent of more than 27,000 meals being rescued in a few months.

Most recently OTR was involved in OzHarvest’s Great Food Rescue Race, which saw a sea of yellow people race around Adelaide raising over $70,000. OTR entered five teams, whose combined efforts raised over $20,000.

Michaela Webster, OTR Chief Customer Officer said, “As South Australia’s leading retailer, we recognise our responsibility in being ambassadors and for helping those in need.”

“We are proud to provide our quality surplus food to OzHarvest, which will then be delivered directly to over one hundred charities who help vulnerable men, women and children across South Australia.

Tim James, State Manager from OzHarvest South Australia said, “OTR’s commitment and fundraising efforts for the Great Food Rescue event were inspiring and humbling. We are so grateful for their partnership and commitment to OzHarvest, it has made a massive difference to people in the community doing it tough.”

OTR employs over 2500 South Australians and has over 130 sites across the state.

OzHarvest has been operating in Adelaide for more than five years, saving over 1.7 million kilograms of good food from landfill and delivering over 5 million meals to vulnerable communities around the state. The network of 240 volunteers and 15 staff work tirelessly collecting food from 160 donors and delivering it to 125 charitable agencies that feed people in need.

OzHarvest operates nationally in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth and in regional communities via its REAP by OzHarvest program. Every $1 donated can help provide 2 meals for people in need.  For more information go to www.ozharvest.org.
